Chapter 9
Declan couldnât really hear what they were saying, but he saw the vampire grip hold of Leviâs arm and had to fight the instinct to lose every advantage he had by running at half energy into the grassed area. Bad enough that he had Levi so twisted inside him that he was ready to give himself up to protect the freaking incubus idiot.
Stayâ¦stay with meâ¦truth in what Connor tells you.
The soft thoughts echoed in his head and he shook them from his head before curling nose to tail and squeezing his eyes shut. Whatever magic heâd hit, and he had no doubt it was magic, had left him feeling worse than shit. His head split in two with pain and his vision blurred when he tried to focus on distance.
âWe donât do well with magic.â
The voice came from behind him and Declan uncurled himself. He moved slowly as each muscle in his shifted form was aching and stiff.
Hell, it was a lot better than when he was human, but he still hurt. Connor used the tree to support himself as he slid to sit with his back against it and his long legs stretched in front of him. Despite the temper inside him, Declanâs wolf tilted his head and exposed his throat.
Connor merely nodded. âI wanted to talk to you while I know you canât move well. Youâre vulnerable at the moment, you need to come down to the house and sleep safely there.â
Connor carried on talking about how it was safe in the house, about how that was the best thing for Declan. None of it made sense. Crawling on his belly the short distance between himself and Connor, he rested his muzzle on Connorâs thigh and sighed with relief when Connor buried a hand in his thick fur. Heâd missed his friend.
âSo I owe you an explanation,â Connor began. âI found Micah really quickly. I donât think to this day that he was actually trying to evade me. It was like following a child with the trail he left. See, he didnât need to hide because he had this freaky connection to his twin brother, Joseph, who is a really nice guy. Turns out my lover is able to take down a werewolf.â Connor chuckled. âMy wolf side rolled over and submitted to the damn bloodsucker, and my human side fought it for as long as it could. But at the end of the day, I didnât want to fight it. He got under my skin and it didnât take long until I was absolutely certain that he was innocent.â
Connor stopped moving his hand and instead ran it the length of Declanâs curved spine from his neck to his tail. He pulled the hand back against the lay of the fur and Declan shivered at the touch.
âWe are wolf and man, we know that, but we spend so much time as human we forget our wolf can make decisions. We are not separate parts, Declan. I had to listen to my wolf as much as I had to make a decision for myself as a human.
